
Josh Chenard is a New England based teaching artist and theatre maker who “consistently shows a refined and distinct directorial voice,” (Las Cruces Bulletin). Recent works include critically acclaimed productions of Desire Under the Elms at Firehouse Theatre, A Doll’s House at TheatreLAB in Richmond, Virginia, the Chicago Premiere of Peter Pan: The Boy Who Hated Mothers at the Athenaeum Theater, Blithe Spirit at Pine Tree Players in Southern Maine, and the Virginia Premiere of the Mr. Popper’s Penguins musical for Virginia Repertory Theatre. Josh is a proud member of the Stage Director and Choreographer’s Society as well as the Lincoln Center Directors Lab where he led an experimental staging of the Costa Rican folk tale La Segua.
As an educator, Josh has been on the faculty of Northern Colorado University, the Head of Acting at New Mexico State University, the Head of Performance at Virginia Commonwealth University, and an invited guest or presenter at a variety of festivals and conferences including the American College Theatre Festival, the Southeastern Theater Conference, the Colorado Thespian Festival, and the Tennessee Arts Academy. Josh is an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, certified in the Tectonic Theatre Project’s Moments Work, and a Certified Teacher of Michael Chekhov’s psychophysical work having been granted a unique certification through the National Michael Chekhov association and by Chekhov’s protégé, Mala Powers. Academic directing credits include This Restless House at the University of Northern Colorado, Rhinoceros and Animal Farm at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Shafer Street Playhouse, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Other Desert Cities, and The Misanthrope for the American Southwest Theatre Company at New Mexico State University.
Recent published work includes the chapter Leading Center, Super Objective, and Style in the Book Building Embodiment (Routledge Press, 2023) and activity/exercise contributions to Improvisation the Michael Chekhov Way: Active Exploration of Acting Techniques (Routledge Press, 2023).
